The best laid plans of mice and men oft go astray.
Fall is not just pumpkins around here. It’s also apple harvest time. Our plan today was to get to an apple orchard, pick some apples and buy some apple cider for tomorrow’s project, enjoy hayrides and maybe a corn maze, follow it up with a quick trip to a grocery store to pick up cauliflower and then come home to make this Roasted Cauliflower Pumpkin Swirl Dip. Too bad the weather didn’t want to cooperate. We were forecast with a slight chance of rain, but the thunder rolled in to let us no the odds were a little higher than reported on The Weather Channel. We on the road just as the drops started to fall.
We decided to visit some family and wait out the rain which only got harder and harder. When it eventually stopped we headed back out to the orchard. We drove and drove looking for the place we went to two years ago when Penny was just a baby. We went to far and hadn’t found it. We turned around and passed up what looked to be the place. Guess what. It was no longer open. Not closed for the day or closed for the season, no it was closed indefinitely. No wonder the phone number I tried calling that morning was not right. No apples for us today, so instead we went to Kohl’s to return some clothes and find pants fo Penny. When we got out it was DInner time and we hadn’t even bought the cauliflower yet. We could stop and get something to eat, but then we wouldn’t want the dip. I didn’t have another pumpkin option for tonight. Would I have to skip a day so early in the month?
It was time for some quick thinking. “I know!” I said to Sarah, “Honey Hut!”
For those of you who don’t know, Honey Hut is home to Cleveland’s Best Ice Cream, and it just so happened that they were rolling out their seasonal Pumpkin Pie flavor.
It was perfect. We’d eat out, then head to Honey Hut, get some ice cream, snap a few pics for the blog and head home. Unfortunately, when I put my camera in the car that day I had accidentally left it on. After a few hours in the car the battery was exhausted. The best laid plans…
Oh well, we still enjoyed the ice cream.
I got the Pumpkin Pie. Sarah got Pumpkin Pecan. And Penny got Banana Chocolate Chip. Everyone went home happy and satisfied.
I’m not sure if we will get around to the dip as I have the rest of the month planned already. But, you never know, something might not work and I can have it as a back up.
Tomorrow we will make Pumpkin Waffles with Apple Cider Syrup for breakfast, and Monday will be Pumpkin Spice Granola bars.
